Heritage for Children

Too often Genealogist get stuck in the past.  Genealogy is much more then our ancestor's, it is also our offspring.  Don't forget to pass your heritage on down.

I have chosen books that I feel reflect the interaction of generations

Long considered an American classic, Longfellow's The Song Of Hiawatha weaves the beautiful oral traditions of the American Indian into a grand epic poem. In this elegant edition, Susan Jeffers' exquisitely rendered paintings capture the grace and nobility of the familiar lyrical verses which depict Hiawatha's childhood.

Here are four stories about Little Bear and his mother, who is always there when Little Bear needs her. Beginning readers will feel a great sense of accomplishment reading each story by themselves, and will enjoy Little Bear's adventures - flying to the moon, making birthday soup, and wishing for the impossible. Minarik, formerly a first-grade teacher, has captured the essence of little children perfectly in this funny, warm, and tender classic.

An extraordinarily different story by Robert Munsch is a gentle affirmation of the love a parent feels for their child--forever. Sheila McGraw's soft and colorful pastels perfectly complement the sentiment of the book--one that will be read repeatedly for years.

Music

Next to reading to my kids, one of my greatest joys is listening to music with them.  We especially like listening to music that has survived several generations.

Raffi turns more to his own originals on this, his best collection, but also turns in excellent versions of traditional songs such as "Apples and Bananas" and claims some nominally adult songs such as "Octopus's Garden" for the children's market. For ages 4-9. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

I have been looking for CD's with the song "Boil Them Cabbage Down" my grandfather's favorite song to sing to his grandkids.  This CD came up on a search. Although, I cannot imagine Papa Sam singing a Cajun Rock'n roll song.
